The story takes place in Normandy, France in 1944. Jerome (played by Philippe Noiret) is the male protagonist, living with his wife Marie (played by Catherine Deneuve) in the La Vie Castle. Jerome and Marie lead a peaceful life, but Marie longs to leave the countryside for Paris to pursue her dreams. The presence of the German army disrupts their lives, and Marie finds herself pursued by a German officer, Dimonchi (played by Pierre Brasseur), and a French spy at the same time as Jerome (played by Philippe Noiret). This emotional entanglement could spark complex emotional conflicts. Marie must face her moral and emotional dilemmas; how should she handle the affections of these two men and her own dreams?
