The film is based on true historical events. The story takes place after the end of World War II, when Germany was defeated and many captured German soldiers became prisoners. During the war, the German army had buried over one and a half million landmines along the west coast of Denmark, and some of the captured young German soldiers were forced to become live landmine detectors. Under the leadership of Danish officer Carl (played by Roland Møller), those captives, still just kids, began the mine-clearing operation, using their hands, their feet, and even their lives to purify the long coastline step by step. However, when the mission was over and the surviving children joyfully thought they had finally escaped the clutches of death and could return home, what awaited them was another equally cruel task.
