In the summer of the second year of the Genki era, Hayakawa's Yauchi (played by Kamezō Fujiwara) and Taihei (played by Minoru Chiaki) are trapped in Akizuki and unable to return home, as Akizuki was defeated by Sanma. Therefore, Sanma heavily guards the Akizuki-Hayakawa border to prevent Akizuki's Yuki-hime (played by Misa Uehara) from escaping. The two meet Akizuki samurai Makabe Rokurota (played by Toshiro Mifune) and Yuki-hime in the mountains, and together they transport firewood towards Hayakawa, unaware of each other's true identities, all for the sake of the gold bars hidden within the firewood. Makabe's strategy helps the four pass smoothly through the border of Akizuki and Sanma, but Yuki-hime, unable to watch Akizuki women (played by Toshiko Higuchi) being humiliated in Sanma, commands Makabe to rescue them. The five rush with the firewood when suddenly they are stopped by four Sanma soldiers. Makabe decisively kills two of them and jumps on his horse to chase down the two who escaped. The pursuit leads them to the enemy camp, where they encounter Sanma samurai Tadaira Hei (played by Shin Fujita). The two feel a sense of missed opportunity upon meeting and engage in a prolonged contest, with neither able to gain the upper hand…
