Hong Kong girl Yuen Bei-er (played by Wen Bixia) and Taiwanese Liao Yuping (played by Jin Yanling) and Zhao Shuzhen (played by Caiqin) aim for fame as the purpose of their lives, but reality proves that they are still far from the life of a star. The three meet the son of a rice shop, Zhang Shudong (played by Tony Leung), at a bar, and soon Yuen Bei-er enters into a cohabitation relationship with him. Zhao Shuzhen's inexplicable death attracts Detective Lan Zhenqiang (played by Chow Yun-fat), but his so-called investigation is mere formality. Liao Yuping struggles to face Zhao Shuzhen's departure, and her grief leads Zhang Shudong to comfort her physically, accidentally resulting in her pregnancy. Liao Yuping's shock fails to provide clarity for Zhang Shudong on the issue of choices, as they both realize that what they thought was love for each other is actually self-love. Furthermore, Lan Zhenqiang's last words before his death make them clearer about themselves (feeling that being with others is better than being alone), yet they still lack the courage to face their hopeless days alone.
