In 1939, David, an unemployed British youth, joined an international organization of guerrillas to fight for democracy and freedom in the Spanish Civil War, opposing Franco's dictatorial regime, just like many socialist youths from around the world. After being wounded, David arrived in Barcelona, where the desperate cries amid the wartime bloodshed became haunting nightmares. He found himself torn between his loyalty to socialism and his newfound love, yet his dreams of reform did not diminish despite being far from the battlefield, ultimately choosing to return to his comrades on the front lines... This film was nominated for the Palme d'Or at the 1996 Cannes Film Festival, and won the César Award for Best Foreign Language Film and Best Film at the European Film Awards.
