During the Korean War, young Yoon Deok-soo boarded a US military rescue ship with his parents, only to face unforgettable partings and reunions for the rest of his life. Although the war had quieted, the Korean Peninsula was divided, and his hometown in the war-torn North felt forever out of reach. As he grew up, Deok-soo (played by Hwang Jung-min), who took on the role of the family’s breadwinner in place of his father, worked hard to earn money. To prepare for his younger siblings' tuition fees, he and his childhood friend, Choi Da-kyu (played by Woo Da-suk), went to West Germany to become miners. Thousands of miles from home, with homesickness weighing heavily on him, Deok-soo serendipitously met a Korean girl studying nursing in Germany, Young-ja (played by Kim Yoon-jin), and his dark life was illuminated with joy. Happy times and the trials of death followed closely behind, but after enduring life-and-death challenges, Deok-soo returned to the home he had longed for and won Young-ja's heart.
