The rising star of Washington, young congressman Steven Collins (played by Ben Affleck), finds his female research assistant suddenly murdered. During a congressional hearing against the arms dealer Pinnacle Corporation, Collins loses his composure, leading to an extramarital affair being exposed, making him the target of public outrage. He seeks refuge at the home of his college friend and former campaign advisor, senior reporter Karl McCaffrey (played by Russell Crowe). While investigating a murder case, McCaffrey accidentally discovers that the deceased is connected to Collins's late research assistant. With the help of colleague Dela (played by Rachel McAdams), McCaffrey's investigation gradually uncovers the insider dealings of Pinnacle Corporation and the scandals involving congressmen. Faced with the pressures of competition in journalism, the truth of the events, past friendships, and social justice, where will McCaffrey’s reporting ultimately lead?
