In Dublin, County Galway, Detective Gerry Boyle (played by Brendan Gleeson) deals with the aftermath of a drug addict's fatal car accident while welcoming newly arrived agent McBride. They investigate the crime scene and deduce the type of killer from the evidence, but unfortunately, their thought processes are completely different. Boyle's reasoning is extremely bizarre, leaving McBride completely bewildered. They interrogate a suspect together but discover he is merely a scapegoat, with the real culprit still at large. Despite being cynical, Boyle is a devoted son, trying hard to keep his terminally ill mother happy. To crack a drug smuggling case worth $500 million on the black market, FBI agent Wendell (played by Don Cheadle) begins analyzing the case for the officers, but is repeatedly interrupted by Boyle. Just as the boss is about to fire Boyle, he points out a major flaw in the report—one of the four suspects is already lying in the morgue. This makes Wendell see Boyle, who joked about racial discrimination, in a new light. McBride is unexpectedly killed by a philosophical-style criminal during duty, leading his wife to seek him out, which makes Boyle feel a heavy sense of responsibility. He and Wendell embark on a journey to catch the murderer...
