After retiring from the navy, Asha (played by Ondas Besikbasov) returns to the steppe and stays in his sister's family's tent. His brother-in-law introduces him to the last unmarried girl in the area, TuPan. Asha, caught up in sharing his sea adventures, fails to notice that the girl behind the curtain thinks his ears are too big. His brother-in-law is very disappointed by Asha's failed matchmaking, and with a flock of ewes frequently having difficulties giving birth, Asha cannot yet take on the responsibilities of a shepherd. Unable to withstand his brother-in-law's cold attitude, Asha returns to propose again, and although he is rejected once more, after peeking through the crack in the door at TuPan, he truly falls in love with her. The life on the steppe is harsh and lonely, with news from the radio and his friend Tony often presenting temptations from the outside world. As the season for nomadic herding approaches, Asha has a big fight with his brother-in-law and leaves in anger, but he is stopped by a ewe that is having difficulties in labor... This film won the "Un Certain Regard" award at the 2008 Cannes Film Festival and the Golden Kirin Award at the Tokyo Film Festival.
