The story takes place at the end of the Chinese War of Resistance against Japan (Winter 1944). A nine-member Japanese army detachment is ordered into the mountains to search for caves that previously stored biological weapons. At the same time, the only family in the mountains is celebrating their grandfather's birthday, who has been dead for many years, by slaughtering a pig. The elderly woman in the family, holding her late husband's erhu, is filled with emotion. Just then, the nine-member detachment bursts into the courtyard and, in a frenzied act, kills the entire family except for three sons who manage to escape. After leaving, the detachment finally finds the cave in the back mountains, but they suddenly realize they cannot descend and return to report back, as the simple Chinese villagers have been enraged by the brutality of the Japanese soldiers. The three brothers want revenge! Thus begins a battle between three peasant sons and nine heavily armed Japanese soldiers. The three originally simple villagers use farming tools such as big knives, axes, ropes, chopping knives, and iron forks against the Japanese soldiers’ rifles and bayonets, managing to trap the soldiers for nearly two years. They use their knowledge of the mountain terrain to keep the Japanese army confined in the cave, daring not to come down until one by one they perish. During this two-year period, the elder brother is killed, the third brother dies in battle, leaving only the timid Erxi, while the Japanese side has only the extremely cruel Japanese captain left. The movie reaches its climax at this moment. The battle has now become a duel between two individuals. Daily harassment, nightly rock assaults, and nightly shouting become the themes of the conflict. In this battle, there are no farmers or soldiers, only "I want to kill you." Winter turns to spring, autumn turns to winter. The battle between the two occurs daily, with each opening their eyes every day with the sole purpose of killing the other. Erxi wants the Japanese captain to pay by taking a life, while the Japanese captain is intent on descending to complete his mission. As the stalemate continues, two years have passed, but their rivalry remains. It is not until our People’s Liberation Army arrives in this long-desolate mountain village that they discover there exists such a special battle. Ultimately, in despair, the Japanese captain commits suicide, and Erxi, shouting "I finally avenged," weeps tears of joy.
