This is a true story. Gary (played by Daniel Day-Lewis) lives in war-torn Northern Ireland, where the IRA is dedicated to opposing British colonial rule. The young Gary idles away his days, getting into petty trouble, and inadvertently offends the IRA. As a last resort, his father (played by Pete Postlethwaite) sends him to England to make his way. However, upon arriving in England, Gary is falsely accused by local eager-to-prove-themselves police of being a terrorist associated with the IRA, leading to his aunt and her family in England being imprisoned as terrorists as well. His father petitions everywhere, but ultimately ends up imprisoned as well. The father and son suffer greatly in prison. Years later, a British female lawyer begins to investigate this absurd miscarriage of justice from the beginning. Will this wrongful conviction be overturned, and will the father and son see the light of day again?
