In 1987, on the eve of the Soviet Union's collapse, Romania, still a socialist country, had clear laws prohibiting abortion. Gabita, a university student abandoned by her boyfriend in Bucharest, unexpectedly becomes pregnant. Her roommate and friend Otilia (Anamaria Marinca) decides to help her obtain an abortion secretly. Through a friend’s introduction, they connect with a doctor willing to perform the procedure and manage to raise a considerable sum of money. However, the amount they have is insufficient to meet the doctor's demands. In the location of the abortion—a cheap motel—the doctor proposes to exchange Otilia's body instead. To fully help Gabita, Otilia agrees to the doctor's demands, and afterward, she begins to reflect on her relationship with her boyfriend, hypothesizing about how he would react if she were to become unexpectedly pregnant. The film's title, "3 Weeks, 2 Days," represents the total duration from Gabita's pregnancy to the abortion.
