In a composition class, Antoine (played by Jean-Pierre Léaud) doodles on an image of a woman passed around by classmates and is punished by standing in the corner. After class, Antoine, left alone in the classroom, vents his dissatisfaction by writing poetry on the wall, which angers the teacher (Guy Decomble) even more. That night, his mother (Claire Maurier) furiously scolds him for not buying flour, while his stepfather (Albert Rémy) gives him some money to buy lunch at Antoine's request. The next day, encouraged by his deskmate René (Patrick Auffay), Antoine plays truant, goes to the movies, and plays games, even witnessing his mother kissing a man he doesn't recognize on the street. On the third day, Antoine returns to school and, in a panic, lies that his mother has died, earning the teacher's forgiveness and sympathy. However, his stepfather learns about his truancy and rushes to the school with his mother, exposing his lie and slapping him twice in front of the whole class. Antoine decides to leave home and write a letter. But at his young age, where can he go? Paris is so big, France is so vast, where is his place of refuge?
