In 1931, Spain's monarchy was replaced by a republic. Fernando (played by Jorge Sanz), a soldier who fled from the Madrid army, is interrogated by two guards during his escape. The veteran decides to let him go, but the younger soldier feels it's against military orders. The two begin to argue, from which Fernando learns that they are father-in-law and son-in-law. Later, the son-in-law accidentally kills his father-in-law and, filled with regret, takes his own life. Shocked by this scene, a frightened Fernando flees in a hurry. While seeking refuge, he encounters a wandering artist named Manolo (played by Fernando Fernán Gómez). Before leaving, Manolo decides to accompany him while also picking up his daughter at the station. When Fernando sees Manolo’s four stunning daughters, he decides to make excuses to stay. He develops emotional entanglements with each of the four women, leading to a hilarious comedy of errors… This film won the 66th Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film, defeating the Chinese film "Farewell My Concubine."
