Hans (played by Hans Hirschmüller), who was once a police officer, loses his job due to being falsely accused by a prostitute. To make a living, he has to become a fruit vendor despite his lofty aspirations. Hans is unable to gain the trust and admiration of the parents of the girl he loves, and at the age suitable for starting a family, he ultimately marries a woman named Irmgaard (played by Irm Her mann). Since getting married, Hans's life officially takes a downturn, and Irmgaard's roughness and rudeness only exacerbate his misfortune. Hans suffers from heart disease, and during his hospitalization, Irmgaard, unable to bear the loneliness, engages in an immoral relationship with their neighbor, Ancel (played by Karl Scheydt). After being discharged, Hans can no longer hawk fruit on the streets and switches to setting up a fruit stand. By chance, he reunites with his comrade Harry (played by Klaus Löwitsch), who brings some joy to Hans's family, but he still cannot prevent Hans from descending into despair.
