Sam (played by Sean Penn), who works at Starbucks, is an adult but has the intellectual level of a 7-year-old. By chance, he takes in a homeless woman. After she helps Sam give birth to a daughter, she disappears without a trace. He names his daughter Lucy (played by Dakota Fanning) after his favorite Beatles song, "Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds." He adores his child. Under Sam's careful nurturing, Lucy grows up and discovers that her father cannot understand slightly more complex stories.
