In the 1980s, mainland China experienced its third population birth peak, with many couples responding to the family planning policy by having only one child. Among them are middle-aged Beijing photographer Cao Depai (Li Xuejian) and his young and beautiful wife Duan Jinghua (Song Dandan), who together with their 5-year-old son Hanhang form a happy family of three. Cao Depai is also about to reach the pinnacle of his career, with his photo exhibition in the planning stage. One day, Cao Depai receives a call asking him to go to the children's welfare institute to pick up his son, leaving him puzzled. Upon arriving at the welfare institute, he meets a silent boy in his teens who has come to Beijing with a letter searching for his father, which is actually a letter he wrote to his ex-wife in Northeast China. He met his ex-wife when he was sent to the countryside, and she stayed there after their divorce. To uncover the truth, he takes the boy to Northeast China. Through the words of his ex-wife's current husband, Cao Depai learns that his ex-wife has passed away, and that she was pregnant at the time of their divorce. This boy, named Zhao Xiaomu (Ye Jing), is indeed his son. In a moment of confusion, Cao Depai considers leaving Xiaomu in Northeast China, but the boy follows him onto the train. After arriving in Beijing, Cao Depai places Xiaomu in the darkroom of his basement where he develops photos, and just as he struggles to explain everything to Duan Jinghua, he learns that she is pregnant, seemingly losing interest in the photo exhibition.
