In the vast mountains connected to the heavens, there is a Tibetan village that has relied on salt transportation for generations due to insufficient food production for self-sufficiency. The old leader Teni's son was supposed to be the next head of the village but unexpectedly died on the salt transport journey. The widely accepted successor, Karma, is seen by Teni as a criminal who intentionally killed his son to seize the leader’s position. On the eve of a new salt transport journey, the village is divided into two factions led by old Teni and Karma, each holding strong opinions and unwilling to back down. Ultimately, Karma leads the young people to set out before the day predicted by the elders, while Teni leads his son and grandson, who are becoming lamas, along with a group of old followers on the divined day. The salt transport teams must not only endure hardships on their way but also face unexpected dangers in the mountains. Which of the two salt transport teams will overcome the difficulties and reach their destination first? The film features a rough yet beautiful visual style, filled with stirring emotion, and is permeated by enchanting Tibetan mantras that refresh the spirit. The film is a collaborative effort by France, Nepal, Switzerland, and the United Kingdom, shot over nine months, and was nominated for the Best Foreign Language Film at the 72nd Academy Awards as well as for Best Cinematography at the 2000 European Film Awards. It won the César Award for Best Cinematography and Best Music that same year.
