Late 1970s, a northern village in mainland China. On this day, the Chen family is celebrating the new marriage of Renwu (Ma Xiaowei) and Xue Shuilian (Wen Yujun). Sister-in-law Wang Qiangying (Wang Shuqin) sees that the wedding arrangements and the bride's attire are far grander than what she had during her own wedding. She complains about her mother-in-law (Wang Yumei) being biased, and insists her husband Renwen should buy Xue Shuilian the same polyester silk pants. Upon seeing that her sister-in-law Renfang (Hong Xueming) also has a pair of polyester silk pants (gifted by Renfang's boyfriend), she becomes even more convinced that her mother-in-law doesn't value her, and demands equal treatment. The helpless mother-in-law wants to borrow money to buy material to ease her daughter-in-law's worries, and kind-hearted Shuilian offers her own money to help. This marks the beginning of Qiangying's unreasonable behavior, as she later attempts to break up Renfang and her boyfriend, forcibly takes possession of property during family division, and abuses her grandfather (Yu Shaokang) after the division, leading even the obedient Renwen to no longer endure her actions; yet, it also marks Shuilian's awareness of family responsibilities.
