This is Akira Kurosawa's first film after World War II. It depicts the Kyoto University professor Taro Ryuukawa incident that caused a stir during the war, the rise of militarism under Minister of Culture Ichiro Hatoyama, and the expulsion of the liberal-leaning professor Ryuukawa, which faced unanimous opposition from the Kyoto Imperial University community at the time. Additionally, it uses the backdrop of the Chulug international disc incident to portray the hardships encountered by the female lead, Yukie, during the war, thereby criticizing war and the prevailing fascism of the time. In the latter part of the film, Yukie decides to pursue independence and experiences suffering. After following the anti-war activist Nao, she initially tastes the sweetness of love, but the good times are short-lived as Nao is imprisoned for life due to his secret anti-war activities, causing Yukie to be humiliated and interrogated daily by secret police. The prosecutor handling this case turns out to be her former classmate, Sekikawa. After Yukie's release, she returns to Nao's beloved hometown and lives with his parents. After Japan's defeat, democracy prevails, Professor Yagihara returns to the university, and Yukie decides to engage in rural cultural movements. The Yukie in the film is not a traditional Japanese woman from the past, but rather a new era woman who, after the war and the ensuing chaos, finally finds herself and stays true to her own will.
