SakuTaro Makimura (played by Gō Ayano) is a novelist obsessed with science fiction. He quit his factory job early on to focus on writing sci-fi novels. Although the popularity of sci-fi novels has gradually been overshadowed by romance novels, he embraces solitude and continues to write for his ideals. His wife, Setsuko (played by Yūko Takeuchi), deeply loves her somewhat naive husband. During the day, she works hard at a bank, and at night and on holidays, she diligently takes care of their ordinary home and looks after SakuTaro's daily needs. One day, Setsuko suddenly falls ill and is diagnosed with late-stage colon cancer, with less than a year to live. Upon hearing this news, SakuTaro decides to write a short story for his wife every day to keep her spirit up. As the stories unfold, filled with joy and sorrow, they accompany each other through over four years of life together... This film is based on the true story of writer Takuro Mayumura and his wife Yoshiko.
