On the night of July 27, 1976, a strong earthquake of magnitude 7.8 struck the Tangshan area, causing buildings to collapse and countless victims. As they faced the imminent collapse of their building, husband Fang Daqiang (played by Zhang Guoqiang) and wife Li Yuanni (played by Xu Fan) rushed to rescue their trapped twin children, Fang Deng (played by Zhang Zifeng) and Fang Da (played by Zhang Jiajun). In a moment of crisis, Fang Daqiang stopped his wife and rushed in to save them, but tragically lost his life. After the earthquake, Li Yuanni discovered that her two children were trapped at both ends of a concrete slab; to save one would mean sacrificing the other. In a desperate moment, she made a difficult choice—to save her son. This decision became an indelible pain in Fang Deng's heart. Later, she was taken in by a couple of soldiers, Wang Deqing (played by Chen Daoming). After the college entrance examination, Fang Deng (played by Zhang Jingshu) entered Hangzhou Medical College and developed feelings for her postgraduate senior Yang Zhi (played by Lu Yi)... Fang Da was rescued but lost an arm, and Li Yuanni raised him to adulthood with selfless maternal love.
