The story takes place in Nice, France in 1976. Agnès (played by Adèle Haenel) is a wealthy young woman born with a silver spoon in her mouth; her family runs the most luxurious hotel in the area. This girl, who has lived a life of comfort and ease, falls for a man named Maurice (played by Guillaume Canet), who is ten years her senior. There are many rumors about this notoriously flirtatious man, but none of them can shake Agnès's love for him; she firmly believes he is her destined one. Due to his gambling issues, Maurice gets into serious trouble and decides to use Agnès's identity to win over Fratoni (played by Jean Corso). Agnès complies with Maurice’s wishes, even betraying her own mother (played by Catherine Deneuve) for him.
