In 1937 Los Angeles Chinatown, officer Jake (played by Jack Nicholson) resigns to become a private detective due to his dissatisfaction with the darkness surrounding him. One day, a woman claiming to be Mrs. Mulwray asks Jake to investigate her husband’s infidelity, and he gladly accepts. Jake discovers that Mulwray is actually the chief engineer for the local water department and is in a dispute with local farmers over the construction of a dam. Soon, Jake receives photos proving Mulwray's affair, but the real Mrs. Mulwray comes to him the next morning, demanding he stop the investigation. As things become increasingly convoluted, Jake is determined to dig deeper...
