Just released from prison, Tom Joad (played by Henry Fonda) returns home to Oklahoma only to find his family home empty. After inquiring, he learns from farmer Jim Casy (played by John Carradine) that local farmers have been forced to leave due to industrial development. Tom and Jim find Tom's family at his uncle's house, and the family decides to head to California in search of new work. They load all their belongings onto a truck and set off. On the way, Tom's grandmother passes away. They discover a place specifically for people like them to work, and they settle there. However, Jim dies unexpectedly, and in seeking revenge, Tom commits murder and has to flee hurriedly. The family is left to search for their next refuge, as homeless farmers wonder where their path lies... This film is adapted from Steinbeck's novel of the same name and won the Oscar for Best Director in 1941.
