Agnes (Harriet Andersson), Maria (Liv Ullmann), and Karin (Ingrid Thulin) are three sisters, each with deep-seated barriers and estrangement within their hearts. Agnes is terminally ill, and beside her is the maid Anna. Agnes never received complete love from her mother and, in her dying moments, fantasizes about mending the strained relationships between her sisters, but her desires repeatedly fall short. Maria is the mother’s favorite child, which breeds jealousy among her sisters. She is entangled in a chaotic love life, wavering between her husband and her lover. The more love she possesses, the more greedy she becomes. Karin's life is even more oppressive. Her relationship with her husband is at a standstill, leading her into self-destructive behavior. The wish for reconciliation feels distant; they want to escape the shadows of life and draw closer to each other, yet find the barriers seem insurmountable.
