The story begins on the fictional island of "Dongji Island," located at the easternmost edge of China. The intellectually challenged young man Hu Sheng (played by Gao Huayang) narrates the tale of his two buddies—Ma Haohan (played by Feng Shaofeng) and Jiang He (played by Chen Bolin). After years of exploring the outside world, Haohan returns to his hometown only to find that the entire island is facing demolition issues. Furthermore, his best friend, the only teacher on the island, Jiang He, is being transferred to a more remote area. Consequently, Haohan makes a decision to drive Jiang He to a school over three thousand kilometers away for registration. The three brothers embark on an unprecedented journey, encountering childhood friend Zhou Mo (played by Chen Qiao'en) who is now a temporary actor, the wayward Su Mi (played by Wang Luodan), Haohan's long-time crush and pen pal Liu Yingying (played by Yuan Quan), and the free-spirited motorcyclist A Lu (played by Zhong Hanliang). What seems to be an ordinary journey is fraught with foreshadowing, leading Haohan and Jiang He to ultimately reach their destination and embark on completely different life paths. This film is the directorial debut of renowned writer and race car driver Han Han.
