Baicao Garden Bookstore, to be precise, the former Baicao Garden Bookstore, closed at the end of May this year. Previously, there was a two-week clearance sale before the closure. During that time, readers came from all directions, and various media outlets rushed to cover it, all eager to catch a final glimpse of the bookstore, which unfortunately appeared somewhat forlorn due to the lack of electricity. I was busy packing and shipping books while dealing with various miscellaneous tasks. By the time the last book was sold, I had only managed to hastily post a closure notice on the door. Throughout the entire process, one regret was that I couldn't send off a bookstore properly and formally with the readers. Fortunately, there are images. During that period, many media came to interview, film, and document the last moments of Baicao Garden. Among them, two individuals "squatted" the longest, coming every day from the time the bookstore opened in the morning until it closed at night, regardless of the weather. Later, when readers recognized them, I learned that they were well-known documentary filmmakers online—"Spider Monkey Bread" and their partner Yue Yuan. They filmed dozens of hours of precious footage during the last two weeks of the bookstore's operation. After careful editing, this has resulted in the upcoming independent documentary "Baicao Garden," which will meet friends soon. The lights in the bookstore went bright and dim, and I was curious about what they captured in the last days of this bookstore that had been open for eleven years. The final Baicao Garden had much beauty—people and books constantly meeting, illuminating each other in the darkness; and many moments of awkwardness—booksellers are so important to the city, yet so vulnerable, defenseless against more powerful forces. Those disputes of "arguing against the sky, earth, and air" reflect the righteous anger of a bookstore owner, as well as the helplessness of an ordinary citizen. Spider Monkey Bread, documentary director, known for the "Wuhan Lockdown Diary" series, named one of Weibo's top 100 video accounts in 2020. Yue Yuan, documentary director and producer, former text reporter, with short works featured in The Guardian, Business Insider, Ruptly, etc. Documentary works include "Meant to Be," among others.
