From Siberia to Tokyo, modeling agencies traverse the most remote corners of the Earth in search of girls willing to become models. This is the theme of the documentary "Girl Model," which provides a stark depiction of the inhumane aspects of this industry. The documentary film "Girl Model" presents a tightly structured process within the entire modeling industry chain, where scouts tend to visit impoverished villages in Siberia, targeting poor girls who aspire to fame, then sending them to Japan for training, and if their careers progress smoothly, selling them off to the U.S. It is noted that the current model supply chain favors younger models, with a trend towards increasingly younger candidates that damages the environment that originally nurtured models; not only young and slender but also resembling underage girls are the targets pursued by many scouts. "There is no lower age limit." Based on this principle, Ashley Arbaugh travels the world recruiting new talent. Along the way, she discovers Nadja, a 13-year-old girl from a remote village in Russia sent to Japan to begin her modeling career. The first step for her is to undergo a full-body evaluation alongside other girls. The girls in their underwear line up in a room surrounded by mirrors, facing a measuring tape and the "judgment" of the "jurors." Girls like Nadja are typically very young and come from poor backgrounds. After signing contracts, they must work far from their hometowns under substandard conditions that are inappropriate for their age. The documentary premiered at the Austin Film Festival in Texas. Just a few months earlier, the Council of Fashion Designers of America (CFDA) expressed support for age restrictions on models, while Marc Jacobs ignored this stance, signing two underage runway models, one aged 14 and the other 15. One of the producers of the film, Ashley Sabin, stated, "We hope that organizations like Models Alliance will watch our film and establish a set of industry standards." He has publicly praised several leaders of this organization, dedicated to securing better working conditions for models, and added, "At the very least, after watching, it can prompt discussions about the lack of transparency in this industry."
