The story takes place in Shaanxi, where farmer Liu Gaoxing (played by Guo Tao) is an enthusiastic individual who enjoys designing flying machines. To make a living, he and his good brother Wu Fu (played by Feng Li) come to Xi'an to work and settle in a rundown warehouse owned by their fellow villager Han Dabo (played by Lin Xue). Their neighbors include a burly man from Northeast China, Huang Ba (played by Hai Yitian), and a couple who breed pigs, Ba Duo (played by Ba Duo) and Xing Hu (played by Miao Pu). Gaoxing's job involves collecting scrap, and although the work isn't glamorous, he finds joy in it, which inspires Wu Fu and the neighboring couple. Additionally, when a little hooligan named Shi Re Nao (played by Huang Bo) causes trouble, Gaoxing steps up to punish evil and promote goodness.
By chance, Gaoxing meets a massage girl, Meng Yichun (played by Tian Yuan), and sparks of love fly between them as they get to know each other. She had previously submitted to businessman Wei Da (played by Zhang Zhaohui) to raise money for her brother's (played by Hu Qinglan) education. After learning about this, Gaoxing decides to actively fundraise with his not-so-wealthy friends. However, after they solve this problem, the massage girl unexpectedly ends up in prison. Will Gaoxing's love for her continue?
This film is adapted from the novel of the same name by Jia Pingwa and pioneers the genre of musical comedy in mainland China.
