Claire (Geraldine Page) loses her husband, leaving her with endless grief and a massive debt. In reality, Claire's living conditions are quite terrible. However, Claire was born into a so-called noble family, and her vanity does not lead her to cut back on expenses; instead, she continues to live a life of extravagance as before. So, what exactly is the source of Claire's finances? It turns out that Claire killed the maid and seized her assets. Dimock (Ruth Gordon) becomes the new maid in Claire's household. Unlike the previous maid, Dimock has a very odd personality but seems to know everything about Claire's past. Who exactly is this woman?
