In the near future, tech genius Ken Castle (played by Michael C. Hall) invents nanotechnology that implants command cells into the human brain. Based on this, Castle develops two real-life online control games—“Society” and “Slasher,” where “Slasher” places death row inmates into a brutal battlefield controlled by offline players. Cable (played by Gerard Butler) is a frequent winner in the Slasher game, having survived 27 matches, and according to the rules, if he wins three more times, he will regain his freedom. A resistance organization secretly plans to overthrow the immensely wealthy Castle. They approach Cable's offline accomplice in the game—young Simon (played by Logan Lerman)—hoping he will abandon his control over Cable, as the latter is about to face Castle's machinations.
