In the late Qing Dynasty, when the fires of war ravaged the land and the common people suffered, the elder brother (played by Jet Li) was betrayed by his comrades, and none of his troops survived. Surviving by feigning death, the elder brother encounters Liansheng (played by Xu Jinglei), who has run away from home. After spending a night together for warmth, Liansheng departs without saying goodbye. The elder brother is found on the street by the third brother (played by Takeshi Kaneshiro), who brings him back to the village, only to discover that she is the wife of Erhu (played by Andy Lau). Plagued by poverty and hunger, the farmers, led by the honest Erhu and loyal third brother, rob government silver, provoking a midnight retaliation from the authorities. The elder brother seizes the opportunity to encourage everyone to join the army for military pay and food, and the three make a blood oath of brotherhood, marching off to war with one hundred and eight men. This brotherhood army fights fiercely, achieving many victories.
