French gentleman Mado (Fernando Rey) is returning to his country by train from Spain, where he meets a mother and daughter, a dwarf, and a friend of his brother. Just before the train departs, a woman (Molina Angela) rushes in with her luggage, and Mado splashes a bucket of cold water on her, which leaves everyone perplexed. After returning to the carriage, Mado recounts his experience to the others: it turns out this woman is Conchita (Carole Bouquet), a Spanish maid from Mado's brother's house. Her beauty deeply attracts Mado. To show his affection, he financially supports Conchita and her mother to help them out of their economic hardships and then proposes that she become his lover. Although Conchita is somewhat reluctant, she ultimately does not agree to his sexual demands. This infuriates him, especially when he discovers that this woman, who claims to be a virgin, actually has another lover... In this film, Spanish director Buñuel symbolically uses two actresses to portray the same character.
