A firefighter rescues the severely injured Job from the ruins of a "virtual space factory" that was destroyed by a massive fire. At this point, he is on the brink of death and has lost all of his past memories. Due to severe burn injuries, doctors performed cosmetic surgery on him, and when he awakens, Job has completely lost his former appearance. Meanwhile, the "Virtual Space Research Institute," led by Walker, has secretly set its sights on Job. They conduct virtual reality experiments on him to help him rebuild his thoughts, ultimately using his abilities to achieve their hidden agenda. Time shifts to a future Los Angeles. Peter and his friends Travis, Harvey, and Sean live in the underground tunnels of the city, living a life of vagrancy. They are all passionate about online virtual games. During one foray into virtual space, Peter unexpectedly encounters Job. The two are delighted to see each other, and Job tells Peter that he is trapped in virtual space, which is about to be destroyed, and he will disappear along with it. Only a person named Benjamin Treys can save him, and he implores Peter to help find Treys and bring him into the virtual space. Peter readily agrees, but after finding Treys, he discovers that he is a complete oddball who lives in a remote desert and is not friendly toward the unfamiliar Peter. It isn't until Peter mentions the Chiyong chip that he agrees to go.
