Viridiana (played by Silvia Pinal), who has spent years in a convent, is about to take her vows. The matron suggests that she visit her benefactor, Uncle Jaime, before the ceremony. Viridiana goes to her uncle's large estate in the countryside, but Jaime becomes emotionally attached to her because she resembles his late wife. After a brief visit, Viridiana intends to return to the convent, but the night before her departure, Jaime begs her to wear his wife's wedding dress and proposes to her. After being rejected, he instructs a maid to drug her. The next day, Jaime commits suicide, and Viridiana decides to stay at the estate. Jaime's illegitimate son José (played by Francisco Rabal) arrives with his girlfriend, immediately hiring people to restore the overgrown land. Meanwhile, Viridiana invites some vagrants and sick beggars to share the estate, taking care of their lives and leading them in sincere prayers, attempting to provide divine assistance for them. José's girlfriend, feeling disappointed, announces their breakup and, while Viridiana and José are in town, the beggars and vagrants invade the estate, causing chaos. This film is the second part of Buñuel's religious trilogy and won the Palme d'Or at the 1961 Cannes Film Festival.
