The sound of birds and insects can be heard in the forest, but the air is filled only with oppressive heat and stickiness. In a sugar factory in Indonesia, under Dutch rule, the elderly lord and his wife Agatha are living in luxury in this foreign land, commanding local servants while defaulting on agricultural workers' wages. One night, after a night of passion with the lady maid Siti, the old lord dies suddenly and mysteriously. Agatha surprisingly joins Siti in hiding the body.
