Guests come to the Sénechal's house for dinner, only to find that the dinner will be held tomorrow night. They have to go to a small tavern, but their plans are thwarted again because the tavern is holding a wake for its recently deceased owner. Another dinner is canceled at the last minute as the Sénechal couple sneaks out of their home for a romantic moment; the guests mistakenly believe that the police are about to raid, and quickly leave. The next dinner is also interrupted unexpectedly by the arrival of troops in the Sénechal mansion. Even nightmares provide material for their frustrated efforts to host a dinner: they eagerly take their seats, only to find the curtains suddenly opened, turning them into performers dining on stage. On another occasion, an army colonel insults the so-called Republic of Miranda in front of Ambassador Don Raphael, nearly causing a diplomatic disaster, and of course that evening's dinner is not worth mentioning. Thus, six characters in the film (including the Sénechal couple and Ambassador Don Raphael) repeatedly sit down to dine, but always face unforeseen obstacles that prevent them from eating.
