Famous British journalist David Locke (played by Jack Nicholson) travels to North Africa to interview local anti-government guerrillas, but due to the language barrier, he cannot reach their camp. When Locke returns to his hotel, he discovers that the businessman he met on the plane, Robeson, has died. Their similar appearances lead Locke to suddenly decide to swap identities with him, resulting in news of Locke's death returning to his home country. Initially, his wife Rachel, who is in a frozen phase of their relationship, reacts calmly, but soon begins to miss her husband. Meanwhile, Locke, using Robeson's identity, meets with several people and uncovers that the businessman was secretly trading weapons with the North African guerrillas. After making his way to Spain, a British producer contacts Rachel to prepare a film about Locke, and Rachel becomes quite interested in Robeson, suggesting the crew locate him. In Spain, Locke meets a girl studying architecture (played by Maria Schneider), and they wander together while evading searches by the British authorities, drifting further and further into this game of identity... This film won multiple awards, including Best European Film at the 1976 Bodil Awards in Denmark.
