The film is adapted from the story "Sir Gawain and the Green Knight," depicting King Arthur holding a banquet in his court. A Green Knight comes to challenge the Knights of the Round Table: who dares to cut off his head on the spot and then receive a blow in return in a year. Gawain accepts the challenge and beheads the Green Knight. The still living body picks up its head and returns to the Green Chapel. A year later, Gawain honors his promise to seek out the Green Knight.
