The story takes place in America in the 1970s, where Ruth (Rooney Mara) and her boyfriend Bob (Casey Affleck) share a close relationship. Beneath the brilliant Texas sunshine, just when they both think that their happy life will continue, misfortune strikes. One day, in an accident, Ruth accidentally shoots a police officer and faces a severe trial. To protect the woman he loves, Bob willingly goes to prison to take the blame for Ruth’s crime. Not long after, Ruth gives birth to a beautiful baby girl, bringing new hope to the imprisoned Bob. As time goes by, Bob's longing for Ruth and their daughter grows stronger. Eventually, a series of unforeseen events lead Ruth to resolve to escape from prison. However, at this point, Bob is unaware that outside the iron bars, everything has already changed.
