"Kōbō Daishi" is a film directed by Jun'ya Satō, completed in 1984. It tells the story of Kōbō Daishi, a scholar sent to Tang dynasty China during Japan's Heian period. This film was made to commemorate the 1,150th anniversary of the passing of this high monk, who left a significant mark in Japanese cultural history. In his youth, Kōbō Daishi risked much to seek the true teachings and the essence of art, traveling across the seas to China to study Esoteric Buddhism and calligraphy. After returning to Japan, he established the Shingon school of Esoteric Buddhism and enriched Japanese artistic content. The film cost 1.2 billion yen and was shot in China with the support of the Chinese government, making it a rare large production at that time. Upon its release, "Kōbō Daishi" grossed over 3 billion yen at the Japanese box office, ranking seventh in the 1984 box office list and achieving great success.
