The story takes place in a strict girls' boarding school known for its harsh rules, where both teachers and students live under the iron-fisted rule of the principal, with no one able to voice their grievances. However, one of the female teachers, Fräulein von Bernburg (Dorothea Wieck), is different; she is gentle and kind, firmly believing that only patience and love can teach these girls what is truly important in life. As a result, von Bernburg is very popular among the students. One student named Manuela (Hertha Thiele) admires von Bernburg deeply, and gradually, their relationship crosses the boundaries of teacher-student friendship and spirals out of control. At the celebration of the drama festival, fueled by alcohol, Manuela confesses her feelings for von Bernburg, only to be overheard by the passing principal, who views this unorthodox behavior as a sickness and confines Manuela to the infirmary.
