Berlin is often presented with a rich subcultural image, and the queer culture of West Berlin is an important aspect of this. Here, there is not only an active party culture and gender diversity, but also a unique club scene. Moreover, various related organizations and events, such as the Lesbian and Gay Museum, AIDS assistance organizations, and the Teddy Award at the Berlin International Film Festival, have established a presence here. In fact, the birth and development of queer culture in Berlin did not go smoothly: before 1969, homosexuality was criminalized and persecuted by the government. Nevertheless, the LGBTQ+ community in West Berlin persevered, transforming the city into a metropolis for queer people. The late 1970s saw West Berlin enter an era of sexual freedom, political liberty, and social integration; however, beneath the glory, the global AIDS epidemic cast a shadow over queer culture. The film focuses on the LGBTQ+ community in West Berlin, documenting their lives from the post-World War II period until the fall of the Berlin Wall. Various groups, including political activists, club owners, musicians, and fashion designers, vividly portray a range of historical events. The film also reveals rare archival materials, taking the audience on a journey through time to appreciate the historical and cultural charm of West Berlin. (Subtitles by Xiaoyi Pu Group)
