A renowned French chef, Gabriel (played by Gérard Depardieu), has earned three Michelin stars and stands at the pinnacle of his career, yet feels an emptiness inside. His son is estranged, his wife has cheated, and there is no one to share his joy with. In this despair, he decides to drink on his own, which leads to a heart attack. At the brink of death, his life flashes back to a Michelin competition many years ago when a short Japanese chef defeated him with a bowl of ramen, leaving him with an everlasting regret that haunts his career. Thus, he resolves to leave everything behind and travel to Japan, seeking the place that reignited his memories of "UMAMI."
