In the 19th year of the Yongle reign of the Ming Dynasty (1421), Zhen Wan (played by Gao Guangze) becomes a Jinshi and enters the court to serve as an official. Just as an epidemic outbreak is reported in Qingying County, Zhen Wan, who is new to the Ministry of Justice and inexperienced in the ways of politics, upholds the belief of "being an official to prioritize the people" and is entrusted to bravely investigate the epidemic. Meanwhile, the emperor receives confidential reports, and a conspiracy is gradually coming to light. Zhen Wan’s friend, the Jinyiwei officer Tan Shoude (played by Chen Yiming), seeks to gain merit for promotion and volunteers to secretly investigate those involved in the conspiracy case.
The epidemic causes heavy casualties and raises many doubts; the people suffer from hysteria, and the medications prescribed by doctors prove ineffective. However, seeking the holy infant talisman given by Master Wu Chong (played by Yang Shufeng) seems to show effective results... The mystery remains unsolved, the cause of the epidemic is still unknown, and deep in the mountains, Tan Shoude suddenly rides in to urge Zhen Wan to immediately cease the investigation and return to the capital for orders. Zhen Wan has long realized that the situation is not simple; how will he choose? At this moment, are his former friends, each working for their own interests, enemies or allies?
