During the Edo period under the Tokugawa shogunate, in the Hane domain of Bungo, a young samurai, Danno Shozaburo (played by Junichi Okada), gets into a dispute with a friend over a trivial matter, resulting in him drawing his sword and injuring the other person. The chief retainer, Nakane Hyōei (played by Kazumi Kurita), pardons him from the death penalty but commands him to monitor the movements of the samurai, Toda Akiya (played by Koji Yakusho), who lives in a small mountain village outside the castle. Toda once served as the district magistrate and is a childhood friend of the chief retainer. Seven years ago, he was accused of having an affair with the shogun's concubine (played by Shinobu Terajima) and was questioned. Since Akiya was responsible for writing the genealogy of the Hane domain, the shogun commanded him to complete the genealogy within ten years, after which he must commit seppuku on the day of completion. Filled with various doubts, Shozaburo meets the calm Akiya, along with his wife, Orie (played by Mieko Harada), daughter, Kaoru (played by Maki Horikita), and young samurai, Ikutaro (played by Haruto Yoshida). As they interact, Shozaburo gradually becomes influenced by Akiya's character and discovers some deliberately concealed truths while investigating the events of seven years ago... This film is based on the work "Aki no Higurashi" by writer Rin Yamamuro.
