Fifteen-year-old boy Charlie (played by Charlie Plummer) lost his mother at a young age and spent his entire childhood in insecurity, resulting in a very introverted and timid personality. Recently, Charlie moved from Spokane, Washington to Portland, hoping to start a new life there, wishing that the new environment would sweep away his previous misfortunes. At the most challenging time in his life, he encounters a racehorse named Pete. The strong and gentle character of Pete deeply attracts Charlie's attention, compelling him to get closer to the horse. Charlie considers Pete to be his best friend, despite everyone telling him that a racehorse is just a racehorse, and once they can no longer compete, they will face the fate of being slaughtered. After losing several races in a row, Pete is also approaching the end of his horse life, and unable to bear the thought of seeing Pete die, Charlie decides to steal him from the racetrack.
