This film tells the love story of a woman who navigates between several men. The singer Gertrud (played by Nina Pens Rode) reveals to her husband Gustav Kanning (played by Bendt Rothe), who is about to become a cabinet minister, that she no longer loves him because he prioritizes his work over her affections. Gustav asks if she has found someone new, which she admits. She then leaves home to meet her lover, the young musician Erland Jansson, and they share their deepest feelings, leading Gertrud to envision a beautiful future together. The next day, Gertrud attends a welcome party for the great poet Gabriel Lidman (played by Ebbe Rode). It turns out she once had a relationship with Lidman, who wants to win her back, but she rejects him. Lidman informs her that he knows Erland actually loves someone else. So when Erland plays the piano and Gertrud sings, she faints. Gertrud goes to see Erland again, hoping to go to Paris with him, but he refuses. And when Gertrud returns home, she encounters Lidman again...
