Travis (Harry Dean Stanton) is lost in the desolate desert of Texas and falls into a coma due to physical weakness. The hospital contacts his brother Walt (Dean Stockwell) to pick him up. After being discharged, Travis remains silent until he sees the sign "Paris, Texas," at which point he finally speaks. Back at his brother's home in Los Angeles, Travis meets his son—Hunter (Hunter Carson), who is actually a foster child of his brother and sister-in-law. However, Hunter does not accept his suddenly appearing father. Later, Travis regains the child's heart in a very special way. Through communication, Travis learns about the whereabouts of the child's biological mother—Jane (Nastassja Kinski). Thus, father and son embark on a journey to find their mother... The film won the Palme d'Or at the 37th Cannes Film Festival.
